Basic Textures:

Got Paint Shop Pro all installed and your ready to start cooking? alrighty then lets get with it.  Follow the steps one by one as listed, and use the screenshots as refrence:

  1. Lets start up Paint Shop Pro, and begin.  The first thing we are going to do is create a new file, In the menu at the top of the page, click File, then New.
    texture01.jpg (10277 bytes)
  2. Here it can get a little tricky.  Take a good look at the screen.
    texture02.jpg (21313 bytes)

The height and width values for the new image should be divisible by 32, and no bigger then 256.  The largest image vampire seems to support is 256x256 pixels.  Notice the drop down box that says Pixels, make your that one is the same on your machine, we don't want it to set it to inches instead.  The Resolution box should be set at 72.000 pixels / inch.   This is a standard image quality and should not give you any problems with your texture in vampire.

The Next Section, Image Characteristics, needs to have special attention paid to it as well.  Make sure the Image Type is set to 16.7 Million Colors (24 bit) and the background, well that one is totally up to you.  I leave background set to Transparent because i'm going to be making the background to whatever is needed when doing my image.

For this tutorial, Set the Image Width to 128, and the image height 128.  Were going to make a basic tiling texture.  A tiling texture is a texture that no matter which side you connect another image of the same thing to, the image will be seamless and look like its one solid image. Once you've made sure everything is set, click OK and your new image will be created.
  3. right now you should have something that looks like this on your screen:
    texture03.jpg (21036 bytes)
now you have your starting image, but its a little plain isn't it? ok well were going to give it a new image, so save this image below to somewhere on your hard drive, where u will be able to find it easly:
    texture04.jpg (7423 bytes)
Were going to use this image to add to our own image.  Once you have it saved, load it from "File then Open" on the menu.  Once you have it loaded you should have something like this on your screen:
    texture05.jpg (32158 bytes)
Showing your current working image, and the new image you just loaded.  Were going to go into a little bit of detail here to teach you a little trick with Paintshop that will come in handy working with more advanced textures.  With the stone floor image selected like above Click Edit on the Menu then Copy.  The entire image will be coppied to the clipboard.
    texture06.jpg (26056 bytes)
  4. Now We need to set Focus back on the original image, so click its title bar once so it gets focus.  After copying the first image we want to add it to our own image, were going to do this a little different now, were going to paste it as a new layer.   Layers offer you many different things that you can do, only changing the aspects of the current layer, rather then the whole image, but we will get into that later on.   Click Edit, then Paste, and then As New Layer.
    texture07.jpg (45820 bytes)
Once the image is pasted in, you will have something like the following on your screen and you will be ready to save the file for use in vampire:
    texture08.jpg (36462 bytes)
  5. Saving the image is farly easy, pretty much like saving most file types, but there are a few small things to remember with textures. So Click File then save so we can get started with the next section...
    texture09.jpg (29201 bytes)
once you have done that you will have a dialog box that pops up, similuar to the below box, this is were we will make the final settings for the image.
    texture10.jpg (38106 bytes)
like above, click the down arrow in the Save As Type box, and scroll till you find TrueVision Targa(*.tga) and click it.  This is telling Paint Shop Pro that we will be saving the file as a TGA.
  6. Now on to the last step, click the options button and you will see the below box pop up.   There are a few settings that we need to make sure are correct before saving the file to disk.
    texture11.jpg (27065 bytes)
Make sure you options box looks like the above one,  24 bits must be marked and Uncompressed must be marked. Once you've done this, click the ok button, name your file and then click Save. Paint Shop Pro will pop up with a dialog box asking you if your sure you want to do this because its going to change the image.  Click ok, all its does is merges all the layers into one layer because of the format we saved it as.
  7. Congratulations, you've just made your first Texture thats usable with vampire.   Textures are by far one of the simplest things to make, but as you will see they can get more complex as you go along.  To learn more about textures continue on to the next tutorial.
