Making Switches:

Now we are going to move on to something a bit more difficult, making switches.  Remember the doors in the Setite Brothel that you had to click a switch on to make the doors open? or in the Vienna Haven where you had to flip the switch to get to the lower level of the haven? well, thats what we are going to learn here.  Switches can have many uses, and come in really handy when making traps.  Someone see's a switch and its like a cat stalking a mouse, they just got to flip it heh.

We are going to need a level without the doors in it.  So load up the old working map we had before working with doors or download this one again so we have something without any doors in it before we get started.

Load up the map and make sure you don't have anything selected again (Click X-Y Screen and press ESC) this is just to insure we aren't changing something we already have and messing up our little tutorial level.

In this tutorial we are going to be making a Switch door.  So lets get started shall we? First thing we are going to need to do is draw a block again for the door.   Make sure you have the height set right in the Z Screen, u can change the height of the block in the Z Screen by clicking outside the block  and dragging up/down to increase decrease its size.

Now we need to make it into a special door.  So in the X-Y Screen right click and move down to Quick Doors, in the list you will see "Switch Door" select that one.

embrace76.jpg (26890 bytes)

Ok our door is made.  Now this door can only be opened by a switch.  A person clicking on the door will not open it.  pretty simple so far right?  make sure you set the little box off to one side of the door.

embrace77.jpg (30106 bytes)

After doing that Press the N Key to get the Not List Viewer up, we need to tell it what direction the door is going to move.  Click the tab labeled Main, and then under orentation, click the button that says "90" this will give it a movement direction.

embrace62.jpg (29899 bytes)

Alright, now click once in the X-Y Screen and Press ESC, we are done with the door for right now.  Now we need to make the switch that will open the door.  So, lets make a small brush and stick it half way up the wall, and have it stick out a little bit.

embrace78.jpg (41608 bytes)

We need to make this brush into a Template Brush, This is nessacary so that the switch will work properly.  To make it into a template brush, right click in the X-Y Screen, at the bottom you should see a selection that says "TemplateBrushes" click that one.  Alrighty, we now have a template brush for our switch.

But still this switch wont do anything.  Press the N key to bring up the Not List Viewer, and look over by the not list (box with all the little red dots in it) you will see right above that is a box labeled search.  Type in the search box "small_lever" and press Enter.  This will make the little box search for it, and once found it will be highlighted.  This is what we will be using for our switch.

embrace80.jpg (40375 bytes)

Now we need to apply this object to our switch, so look right above the search box, there is a button that says "Apply Template"  Click this once.   Alrighty now our switch is now defined as a switch, but still, it will do nothing if clicked.  Now we need to go back to the X-Y Screen, use the arrow keys to move your little guy around till you can see the door we made in the Camera View.

embrace81.jpg (17561 bytes)

Now that we can see the door, we move on to the next part, linking the switch with the door. Deselect the Switch and select the door. then use the arrow keys to turn to where you can see the switch again.  Press Shift+C to get the codex linker up.

embrace82.jpg (21655 bytes)

now, you will notice that there are different values to this door then the double doors.  Yep, With this door, there is Open Time And Switch,  the one we need to pay attention to here is Switch.  Just like in the Double door tutorial, we need to click right below the 0 in the first box for Switch, once its lit up, click on your switch in the camera view.  You will notice now that your switch field has a value to it now.

embrace83.jpg (22247 bytes)

click Apply then click the X in the right hand corner of the Codex window to close it.   Once you do this you will see a purple line going from your switch to your Door, now this door can only be opened using a switch.  Pretty cool eh?

Well you've made a switch, and it works now. Experimenting with switches can end up to be alotta fun, and the more you work with them the more possibilities you will see emerge, it just depends on your imagination.
