1. What is the Mage Mod?

The Mage Mod is a modification for the PC game Vampire : the Masquerade : Redemption (VTMR) published by Activision. It allows players to play multiplayer games as Mages as in White-Wolf’s pen and paper (PnP) role-playing game, Mage the Ascension.

It is part of the WoDmod which is a set of mods which intend to recreate the World of Darkeness inside VTMR with as close to PnP rules as possible.

2. Where can I get it?

The latest version can be found on http://www.wodmod.com.

3. What is "Mage : the Ascension"?

"Mage : the Ascension" is a role-playing game by White Wolf, creators of the "Vampire: the Masquerade" role-playing game on which the "Vampire : the Masquerade : Redemption" computer game is based. All these games, along with Werewolf, Changeling and Wraith exist in the World of Darkness. Go to www.white-wolf.com for more info.

4. Why does the game crash to the desktop or hang when I enter LAN mode or when I log in to Internet mode?

There is a bug in the way that Vampire handles the character selection screen.

If it finds any characters that don't quite fit in with the currently selected mod then it crashes to the desktop (or hangs) when they are selected. This is a particular problem when you consider that the last used character is always selected when you enter.

The solution to the problem is to load the mod that the last character was used in. Select a basic character using a standard skin at that point. Start a LAN game and exit. Then the other mod should load ok.

This is the most common problem that occurs and it could occur when you mix any mods.

5. I installed it all correctly but I can’t find any of the tomes. What’s wrong?

This is most likely because you have not upgraded VTMR to patch version 1.1. Get it from here http://www.planetvampire.com/downloads.

6. I used the "Awaken Mage" tome and the rote tomes but I can’t find any rotes. Where are they?

The rote tomes only load you up with rotes that you can use.

After using the "Awaken Mage" tome you must advance your character either directly with the Story-Teller tools or with experience that the Story-Teller gives, you. You will need to increase you Sphere levels, but don’t forget that any Sphere levels above your Arete are ignored. So increase your Arete as well.

After you have done this you may use the rote tomes to get new rotes. And keep the tomes ready for when you do your next advancement.

7. Do you have to play with others who have downloaded the Mod? My Magick does not work when I join other people’s games. What is happening?

The actual bit of code that does the rotes and tomes must be on the server (the machine the Story-Teller (ST) uses).

The disciplines and tomes will appear to you when you play the game on a server without the mod. But when they try to execute the code nothing happens, because the code is not on the server.

This will become less of a problem when the WoD Mod combines in to one uber-mod... but that's a while off yet.

8. If I download the new beta mage mod then can I still run it with the old program or do I need to delete these old files and replace them with the new ones?

It should work fine just installing the mod over the top of a previous release. However if you do have problems just delete the WoDMod directory, and re-install the mod. None of your characters will be deleted when you do this, as they are stored in the Crypt directory.

9. I am having trouble adding rotes into the game. The readme doesn't say what they are?

A Mage has abilities defined by Arete (or enlightenment) which goes in a scale between 1 and 10 hence the need for high Arete. They also have dots in the 9 spheres of Magick: Mind, Time, etc...

Any spell a Mage casts will be based on levels in these 9 spheres. E.g. Invisibility requires Forces 2 and Correspondence 1.

Any ability can be cast in two ways. Either a well-defined method (a rote) or off the spur of the moment (dynamic). Rotes are by nature very limiting, but easier to use. Dynamic casting is more difficult but can do virtually anything within the sphere definitions.

Dynamic casting is done by discussion with the storyteller and role-playing out the results. It really is beyond the game system to perform.

Rotes however are well-defined effects and can be more easily simulated in the game. They cost no experience, but you need the correct sphere levels to cast them.

To learn a rote: obtain the correct sphere levels, and Arete (any sphere dots above the Arete score are ignored) and the read the appropriate tome. Look for mage_tomeforcesrotes etc.

The tome will not vanish, as it could contain more rotes that you don't already know. But after reading if you had sufficient Sphere/Arete levels some new "disciplines" will have been added to your list.

If you want to know any more about the Metaphysic of Magick then I suggest you beg, borrow or buy the "Mage : the Ascension" rulebook.

10. Why do the rotes have such a long or short duration?

The rote durations are based on the Pen and Paper game rules. In those it depends on the number of successes attained when the rote is cast. This then results in the duration being defined as a turn, scene, story, or chronicle.

These durations are fine for the PnP game but the computer game is in real time so requires a more defined set of values. This is why the durations are as they are. However they are under review and the next version has different durations.

11. How can I cancel an effect that is on my character?

An effect that you have cast on yourself (or sometimes on another character) appears as an icon on your 3d view. This may be underneath your discipline pane. To switch off one of these effects just right-click on this icon. See the rote descriptions in the readme file for info on which rotes can be cancelled this way.

If someone else has cast a rote on you then you can’t just right click on the icon. Instead you must use the "Unweaving" discipline (in the main “Magick” group). This requires that have Prime 1 in order that you can "see" the effect on you. "Unweaving" is very hard to do, but don’t give up. Unless the caster of the spell was very good indeed you should be able to remove the effect, though it may take a very, very long time! This may get easier when I have implemented extended casting in a later version.

In some cases you can’t even use "Unweaving" on yourself. You have to get someone else to use "Unweaving Other" on you. This is the case with ShapeChanging rotes.

12. Where are the Matter, Mind, Prime and Spirit rotes tomes?

The mod is still in development and will be for some time. Beta 1.01 does not contain rotes or tomes for these spheres, yet.

13, What is the "Dynamic Effect Type" discipline for and what do the sphere disciplines do?

Mage is a game for which we could never hope to implement all the possible effects. Some effects will just have to go down to role-playing. The “Dynamic Effect System” is an attempt to help with that process.

The name comes from the rules (actually it may have been Ars-Magica but never mind). What it refers to is an effect that has not been learnt beforehand (i.e. is not a rote). So it fits quite well.

When you play the PnP game and you want to cast a spell you have to decide on the following before rolling the dice:

These decisions is also have to be made when a player wants to cast a Dynamic effect in the game, Eventually when the correct settings have been input. The player uses Arete to roll the dice, print out the number of successes and gain paradox etc. Then the Story Teller should modify the environment based on what as happened or describe to the player what they have seen.

If you want to know any more about the Metaphysic of Magick then I suggest you beg, borrow or buy the "Mage : the Ascension" rulebook.

14. Why does Paradox not seem to have much effect?

At the moment Paradox only damages the Mage. Also this damage operates using the rules in the PnP game. However in the conversion to the VTMR system some further balancing will need to be done. Also Paradox should perform other things other than just damage. Some work will be done to bring as much variety in the Paradox effects as possible.

15. How do I cast rotes?

First of all you need to learn some rotes. To do this follow the procedure outlined in Question 10. When you have done this you should have a set of discipline groups. These contain the rotes that you know.

Rotes are cast in exactly the same way as in the Vampire game. The only difference is that they cost 0 experience and they refer to the Sphere and Arete levels of you character.
