  Welcome
Many years ago a Redemption player could log into WON and roleplay with others any time of the day or night. As you all know, the number of online players has dropped substantially in the past five years. This has made online roleplaying in Redemption prohibitively difficult, leading to even more players withdrawing from the community. Still, there were a number of players who were still interested in participating in an ongoing, roleplay-focused chronicle. In the summer of 2007 I decided that all we had to do was get organized..."if you build it, they will come" and all that. So I did a little research, felt out the community's preferences, and laid the groundwork for the chronicle you are currently reading about. If you would like to play with us, please read this entire page, as it will provide you with the information you will need to get the most out of the chronicle.

  Setting and Story
My name is Skyra to Hollow and I am your storyteller in this chronicle. Our story takes place on the Island of Oahu, which is the most densely populated of the Hawaiian Islands. Measuring just 20 by 30 miles, Oahu is home to nearly a million people. Most of them reside in and around Honolulu, living out their lives in this tropical paradise. Like most people, they don't look too closely at the rising homeless population. When they see coke dealers lingering on the street corner, they look away. When they meet the gaze of one of the city's many prostitutes, they dismiss the city's problems by reminding themselves that they live in paradise. Truth be told, Honolulu has all the problems one might expect in any city its size. While the sunlight dances off the waves as they crash against the newest surf tournament hopefuls in Waikiki, there are many darker, older things who prefer solitude that the sun does not afford them. Thousands of miles from the nearest continent, the Hawaiian Islands tend to bear down on their inhabitants over time. "Island Fever" sets in, driving people to leave for the mainland. Not all of its inhabitants can leave, though. Intercontinental travel can be dangerous and expensive for those who have...special considerations.

High above the city, the mountains reach into the clouds as if seeking to escape the light, noise, and chaos brought by these relatively new white people. The jungles cringe at the suburban sprawl, wondering what went so wrong so quickly. The Pacific Ocean, timeless and merciless, occasionally sees fit to remind the people that the islands sit in her domain, and that she might reclaim them at any time. The goddess Pele looks over at Oahu from her perch atop the Big Island, and she scorns the puny human newcomers. The volcano whispers and then roars in harmony with the goddess' mood. Ancient and not so ancient beings alike hide in the shadows, in garbage strewn alleys, in unmapped sea caves, atop razor-sharp volcanic spires, amid the dense jungle foliage, all calling the Islands their home. Some by choice, many others by chance. This is the stage that we stand on. This is the campfire, and we are all gathered around. Now...tell us a scary story.

  Logistics

This is all the stuff that has to be laid out before we can ever really do anything. Be sure to read this before going through the work of making a character.

Time and Place

Game sessions will be conducted over Hamachi, using the channel "PlanetVampire" with a password of "vtmr" (lower case). At this point all of the players have agreed to a Saturday afternoon (North America) or Saturday evening (Europe) timeframe. Sessions will likely be between 2 and 6 hours each, depending on what goes on, how many players there are, and other scheduling factors. Every week around Friday I will perform housekeeping on the Hamachi channel we use, so you will need to rejoin it whenever you plan to participate. This is to make sure people don't join the network without ever playing, which prevents actual players from getting into the network.

Technical Specifications

We use Redemption patched to version 1.1. Our primary mod is Wodal, which is currently at version 0.2a. Version 0.3 looks like it will be ready soon, and we will likely continue to upgrade our chronicle as new versions are released. Maps of the Ages is the only map pack that we will be using for the forseeable future, though I am open to using others as long as there is a clear need for it. For skinpacks, I'm currently working on making a "short list" of packs that have both quality and stability. At this point the NoN Mega Pack and Bloodlines Mega Pack are approved. Once we've determined which other packs are acceptable, I'll make an announcement to all of our players and update the download list.

Connectivity

All players are required to verify that they can connect to my hosted game. This doesn't take long; just find me on Hamachi and tell me you want to verify connectivity. At that point I'll create a game in Redemption, and then you join it. If you encounter connection difficulties, we can work it out together. The purpose behind this requirement is to make sure that we don't take 4 hours to prepare a critical scene with a new player, only to find that they can't connect. In order to get the most out of Redemption's online capabilities, you may need to utilize the Troubleshooting thread and its Hamachi addendum (at the very bottom). Many routers are tempermental about Redemption, and the info in that thread has helped quite a few players overcome connection difficulties.

Character Creation (updated 15 Sep 07)

Disclaimer

Before we get any further I have to reiterate that this is a roleplaying chronicle, and that all players will be expected to sustain a certain level of quality and maturity. As such, I will reject character submissions that are poorly written, implausible, or those that overemphasize combat abilities. Characters are expected to be realistic in their presentation and background. Names like "HaxorF@c€" and "BloodDemon13" will be summarily dismissed.

Character Creation Guidelines

Our story focuses on Neonates and Fledgling who are either independent or members of the Camarilla. Anarchs are also a possibility, so long as their ideologies aren't so extreme that they have difficulty interacting with Kindred outside of their own sect. As of this article's writing, our oldest player character is 25 years undead, and I would be very hesitant to approve any characters older than that. So far we have 7 approved characters: 2 Cam Brujah, 1 Indie Brujah, and 1 each from the Gangrel, Toreador, Tremere, and Malkavian clans (no, I won't tell you who's who). When creating your character, please follow these steps:
  1. Write a solid background and submit it to me for review. Remember that this chronicle is set in Hawaii, so your character will need to have a reason for being there. If you know nothing about Hawaii, then it's perfectly acceptable to create a character who was just visiting the islands prior to her embrace. Your character's background should be no less than half a page, and it should include the following information:
    • When and where the character was born
    • What the character's family life was like
    • What he or she hoped to be as an adult
    • Any close friends, and the nature of their relationship
    • How and when the character met his or her sire
    • What they've been up to since the embrace
  2. Review and revise any highlighted areas I may send back to you
  3. Create a pen and paper style character sheet using the rules in Vampire: the Masquerade Revised
    • Provide adequate explanation for any abilities, backgrounds, merits, or flaws that involve NPCs
    • All characters must be on Path of Humanity
    • No abilities or backgrounds above level 3 unless special approval is granted
    • No Disciplines above level 2 unless spcial approval is granted
    • Out of clan Disciplines may be allowed, so long as they are one of the "Cardinal Eight" (Animalism, Auspex, Celerity, Dominate, Fortitude, Obfuscate, Potence, or Presence) and your character is experienced enough to justify knowing them
  4. The following Merits and Flaws are off limits unless you put a very good spin on it:
    • Iron Will
    • Amnesia
    • Conspicuous Consumption
    • Mistaken Identity
    • Probationary Sect Member
    • Unbondable
    • Nine Lives
    • True Faith
  5. Remember that all characters begin with 15 freebies. Additional freebies may be awarded for especially creative, moving, or otherwise interesting backgrounds. So far three players have been awarded between 5 and 10 additional freebies by writing a good background.

Prelude

After the logistics have been worked out, character concept has been approved, the background written, and the character sheet finished, there's one last (and very important) thing to do: the prelude. Whenever possible, every player character will run through a prelude with me. This is an intense one-on-one roleplay session where we will revisit many of the character's pivotal moments throughout her life. Typically the session will culminate in the character's embrace, though some slightly older Neonates may extend their prelude all the way up to the actual, real-world date. Each prelude can take between 2 and 6 hours, depending on how much detail you want to go into. Once the prelude is finished, the character is "fully certified" and may enter any non-private session during the life of the chronicle.

Another Disclaimer (Updated 3 Sep 07)

Redemption is an M-rated game. White Wolf bills its products as "games for mature minds." This chronicle deals with themes of graphic violence, sexuality, drug use, and many things that would make your mother cry if you did it in real life. I have adopted an "anything goes" stance with regard to the actual content during roleplaying sessions. I won't (can't) check your ID prior to you joining the game, but I trust that all of you are able to handle whatever you may encounter in character. Be advised that everything in here is provided "as is." If you have a genuine problem with the contents of the story, please tell me about it so we can resolve the situation to everybody's satisfaction. If you don't tell me, I won't know.

When discussing the story on the forum, remember that the IGN/GameSpy has a significantly more strict content policy than I do as a storyteller. What is acceptable in-game may not be acceptable for discussion on the forum. Sorry if it seems like a double standard, but it's a necessary rule since the forums are public, whereas our game sessions are private. Once again: this game is not for the immature, the careless, or the faint of heart.
