Title: Club Darkness40K
Author: Darkness40K
Download: Here
Let's begin this review with a small note on coloured lighting. Coloured lights can be good if they are sparingly. If not they can be a very, very big pain in the butt. They usually make maps look like they've be created whilst on an acid trip and they eat a serious amount of processor power in the process. So please if your going to use coloured lighting in your maps, be sensible about it. This has been a Fleshcraft community service message.
But, I hear you cry, what does the short rant above have to do with this particular map? Simply put Club Darkness40K doesn't use any standard lightbulbs, they're all of the coloured variety. The action takes place in rooms lit with pale blue, purple or green light.
This is forgivable as the map is a club and as such you do expect some really stupid lighting, however in a game really stupid lighting does lead to some problems...
This map is slow, I had to take down the detail settings on Vampire to get it to run at a decent rate. Once I had done this though the map seemed to run fine.
The author also commits the mapping crime of using lights with no source, the corridor between the entrance area and dance floor is the main culprit for this.
Now with that out my system we can being the review properly. This map is based on a club, which I doubt actually exists, and it is made up of a reception area, a cloakroom, some corridors, a main room containing a bar, a DJ booth and a dancefloor and a staff only area.
This map is quite large in size for a user created vampire map and although the level is quite basic looking in its construction in some areas the general attention to detail around the map is good.
There are Go-Go dancers in cages hanging from the roof, a long list of staff including barmen, cashiers, cloakroom attendents, strangely a cat called Satan who apparently "Has plans", even a DJ Darkness40K on the wheels of steel.
The map seems to have a lot of bugs though, mainly in the form of clipping errors. In some instances I could walk through the seats that are positioned above the dance florr and when I tried to attack DJ Darkness40K with a werewolf the hapless Garou just ran straight through the floor...
Scoring -
Originality: 2
It's a club as you would no doubt find anywhere in the world.
Artistry: 3
Although there is some pretty basic construction in some areas of the map and invisible light sources the map looks quite good, if you can stomach the lights that is.
The attention to detail is also very commendable and offers some genuine humourous moments, for me at least.
Authenticity: 3
Due to the fact that this map could only be used in the Modern Ages I'm giving it a three.
Technical: 2
This map has way too many coloured lights which make it very slow. It also has some clipping problems.
Overall: 10
Extra -
Although this pack is available on it's own I would recommend getting it as part of one of the Maps Galore packs from Mod Haven.
